Gabon MP arrested in Kigali after alleged assault on RwandAir official.

KIGALI, Rwanda, September 9, 2026.

A Gabonese Member of Parliament, Augustin Lobelle Yembi, was arrested in Kigali after he was accused of physically assaulting a RwandAir supervisor at Kigali international Airport.

The incident, reportedly happened on September 3,2026, while Yembi was in transit through Rwanda. Reports circulating from Rwandan and Gabonese media say that altercation developed between the Gabonese Lawmaker and a RwandAir official before the situation escalated.

According to footage reported by local media Yembi allegedly approached the RwandAir employee and struck him during the confrontation. The incident was subsequently managed by authorities, leading to the MP’s arrest.

Coming after the incident. Yembi was reportedly taken into custody in Rwanda while the authorities deal with the case. The escalation attracted attention to both Rwanda and Gabon due to Lawmaker’s position.

The case was discussed by Gabon’s national Assembly, whose speaker, Michel Regis Onanga  Ndiaye, reportedly led discussions concerning the situation. According to the African Press Agency, Yembi has been held in Rwanda pending possible proceedings over the alleged violence against RwandAir supervisor.

Diplomatic Intervention.

The case later moved into Diplomatic Arena, with authorities from Rwanda and Gabon working on handling the situation.

Gabonese authorities said that the diplomatic engagement between Rwanda and Gabon contributed to Yembi’s release from Rwandan justice system. The MP was subsequently handled over to Gabonese authorities.

APA reported that Rwandan authorities authorized his departure on September 6, coming after diplomatic efforts embodying the two countries.

The development comes against the backdrops of relations between president Kagame of Rwanda and President Brice Clotaire  Oligui Nguena of Gabon, which Gabonese officials  cited as a part of diplomatic efforts around the case.

Legal Proceedings Is Expected in Gabon.

Even though Yembi has departed from Rwanda, the case is not necessarily considered closed.

According to APA, the Gabonese lawmaker is expected to face proceedings in Gabon, where authorities will examine the circumstances around the incident and determine what action to be taken.

Gabon’s national Assembly is also reportedly waiting further formal information before deciding whether the incident could have for Yembi’s parliamentary status or immunity.

Incident Brings Attention to Airport Conduct.

The incident has made significant discussion because it happened at one of Rwanda’s major international gateways and included a foreign parliamentarian and an employee of a country’s national airline.

Kigali international airport is the major international airport serving Rwanda, while RwandAir maintains its Kigali Headquarters at the airport.
